Fundraiser

‘Redlands Remembers’ is a community fundraising campaign to raise funds to install a dignified military memorial headstone for Private William Arthur Mobbs, a local serviceman who served for Australia in both the First and Second World Wars and today lies in an unmarked grave at Cleveland Cemetery.

In 1916, Mobbs enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force, serving overseas for more than three years, including on the Western Front in France with the 3rd Divisional Ammunition Column.

More than twenty years later, when the world was again at war, he stepped forward once more. In 1940, at the age of 49, Mobbs enlisted again, serving with the 1st Garrison Battalion during the Second World War.

After the war he settled in the Redlands, living in Birkdale, where he worked as a labourer.

Despite serving Australia in two wars, his grave at Cleveland Cemetery was never marked.

Thanks to the work of the dedicated volunteers at the Remembrance Army, this oversight has now been uncovered. With the support of his family, the Remembrance Army and Henry Pike MP, the community now has the opportunity to put this right.

A contribution is available through the Australian Government’s Marking (First World War) Private Graves Grants Program, but it does not cover the full cost of manufacturing and installing a fitting military memorial headstone for this local veteran.

That is why we are asking the Redlands community to help.

Our goal is to raise $4,800 to ensure that Private Mobbs’ final resting place is permanently marked and that his service is properly honoured.

After serving Australia in two wars, William Arthur Mobbs deserves better than an unmarked grave.

Please note: Any funds raised over and above will contribute towards headstones

for other Redland local veterans who currently rest in unmarked graves (as approvals continue to proceed).
