In Australia, Government supplied military headstones/plaques issued by Department of Veterans' Affairs/Office of Australian War Graves are 'Official Commemorations' and are cared for in perpetuity by DVA/OAWG. Australian returned services personnel who did not meet the criteria (criteria can be found here and here) have either a private memorial or are in an unmarked grave.
Below is a very small selection of the many veterans' private granite headstones we have voluntarily relettered in Brisbane since 2020. Cate has been undertaking granite headstone reletterings in the Cook Islands since 2014, and Cate & Katrina in Brisbane since 2020. We follow the New Zealand Ministry for Culture & Heritage conservator protocols, and we always seek descendant approval.
Since 2014, Cate has voluntarily held a number of granite headstone relettering workshops in Brisbane and surrounds and the Cook Islands. We have had some wonderful volunteers assist us since 2020, and we sincerely thank them for their help and commitment.
