26 GRAVES. 26 STORIES. ONE FINAL TRIBUTE​

 

Help Us Honour 26 Forgotten WWI Veterans.

​

More than 100 years ago, 26 Australian WWI veterans served their country.

​

Today, they lie in unmarked graves at Toowong Cemetery, without a permanent memorial to recognise their service and sacrifice.

 

We are determined to change that.

​

For the past six years, the Australian Remembrance Army, run entirely by just the two of us, Katrina Trevethan and Cate Walker, has been working tirelessly to ensure that First World War veterans buried in unmarked graves are finally recognised with a permanent headstone.

​

From the initial research and tracking down service records, to contacting descendants, preparing applications, coordinating with councils and organising the marking of graves, every aspect of this work is undertaken by the two of us. There is no larger team or group of volunteers behind us — just two people committed to ensuring these veterans are remembered.

​

We are currently seeking funding to mark 92 WWI veterans, but there are 26 additional veterans whose graves are ready to be marked — and we need your help to make it happen.

​

The Australian Government provides $620 towards marking each veteran's grave. However, this doesn't cover the full cost.

We need to raise a further $900 per veteran to provide:

​

• $100 — Plaque installation
• $250 — Bronze plaque
• $200 — Concrete footings for headstone
• $350 — Headstone

​

That means our fundraising goal is $23,400 to ensure all 26 veterans receive the permanent memorial they deserve. Every dollar donated goes directly towards the cost of marking a veteran's grave.

These aren't simply names on a list.

They were sons, husbands, fathers, brothers and mates. They had families, lives and stories of their own. They answered Australia's call to serve, and we believe they deserve to be remembered and honoured.

For more than a century, their graves have remained unmarked. Now, we have an opportunity to change that.

​
